Hike up Wright's Mountain, Vermont

Hike Up Wright's Mountain, Vermont
Thursday, March 3rd

Having arrived at our latest house-sit near Bradford, Vermont, we spent the first few days with our wonderful home-owners who have become our new friends. Eileen and Dick are awesome people who have huge hearts and have made us feel totally at home.

Yesterday, we took them to the airport for the first leg of their 6-week vacation in the Southern Hemisphere and came back to enjoy our first full day of our official house-sit.

Their beautiful home affords magnificent views of the Green Mountains and we'll be featuring it in a future blog, along with our three new furry friends who have already made a place in our hearts!
Our Home for the Next 6 Weeks

Dick had told us that there are 6 seasons in Vermont - the usual four, and then the ice season and the mud season!!! Just to the south of their 170-acre property is Wright's Mountain, with a viewing cabin overlooking a magnificent panorama. Eileen suggested that it would be wise not to do this trail during the mud season as, even with the truck that they have generously allowed us to use during our stay, we would have difficulty negotiating the 5-minute drive to the start of the trail - let alone the trail itself. So, as the temperature was about -20 C (-4 F), the ground was firm enough to be easily negotiated - and with the sun shining in a clear blue sky, we decided to go for it - and we're so glad we did!!

The rustic cabin provides shelter at the summit of the Mountain, with an elevation of 1,822 feet. We had been told that the vantage point offers spectacular views in all seasons, and we weren't disappointed. What we didn't know is that there are some amazing views from various vantage points on both sides of the trail. The cabin can be seen from the meadow which we overlook from the octagonal home.

Consequently, we were able to see the top of our home from the cabin.

We had planned to have a picnic at the cabin, but the wind was bitingly cold at that point, so we decided to wait until we got home. Next to the cabin, there is an outhouse and Mark - who has developed a habit of making outrageous suggestions for photo-ops - said that it would be a good idea for me to take my rightful place on the throne!

On the way down, we spent some time sitting on a bench overlooking the view of Mount Washington, the highest point of the White Mountain Range. The wind was less of an issue on this side of the trail and the warmth of the sun was welcome.

This is one trail that we feel we'd love to repeat during the Summer or Fall on another visit.
