Road Trip - Day 12 - Dallas - San Antonio

Day 12 - January 12th:  Dallas - San Antonio

A beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies accompanied us on our ride today. Arriving at San Antonio, it was warm enough for us to shed our jackets and even walk around in short sleeves at times, enjoying the warmth of the sun again.

San Antonio has to be one of the most beautiful cities - and it has fast become our favourite. The city is well known for its River Walk - which weaves its way all over the place so that you could spend hours walking or running beside the river as an alternative to the streets above.

As we approached the cathedral, the bell started to peal as clergy processed outside and entered through the main door for the 2 p.m. Mass. The Cathedral Square is a fair size, and has fountain displays in front of the building. After our earlier experiences with snow, ice, and unseasonably cold weather for the southern States, it was great to see the flowers again in the square.

Stopping to smell the roses!

We descended the steps to the River Walk, and followed the path for about 30 minutes before re-emerging at the street level to visit the Alamo Shrine - the main purpose of our stop here in San Antonio.

Amazing trees!
Very interesting it was, to make our way through the complex and learn about part of American history which was unfamiliar to me - apart from the Ballad of Davy Crocket - an old 78 r.p.m. record (remember those?) which nearly wore out because of frequent plays when I was in my pre-teens! I'm always amazed at how history links so many events across the world which demonstrates that we are all in this together and that our actions, small as they may be, have an effect upon those around us - and beyond.

Returning to the River Walk, we ate a healthy meal at one of the many Mexican restaurants that pepper the walkway. Very tasty - and I loved that the Caesar salad I had came with the dressing on the side - a first for me!

A final trip up the Tower of the Americas for views of the city from the observation deck rounded up our day - a splendid day among some of the most friendly people you could wish to meet.

Mark is no longer missing home!
