Road Trip - Day 15 - January 15th New Orleans, LA - Mississippi - Alabama - Tallahassee, Florida
We’re now
about halfway on our road trip, and the day was spent traveling from New
Orleans to Florida. We chose Tallahassee as a stopover to give us a break from
driving to our destination – Fort Myers – where we’ll
be staying with friends
for a few days. This will be a welcome respite from packing/unpacking that
comes with a road trip!
We were
thinking that there would not be much to see on this leg of our journey – but
how wrong we were! There’s always something new if you look for it. Once we hit
Mississippi, we took a detour from Interstate 10 along Hwy 90 – a more scenic
route that skirts the Gulf of Mexico.
Neither of us had seen the Gulf before and we were anxious to get a glimpse of it as soon as possible. Though cool, the sky was clear blue and the sun shone on the righteous (including us!!!). The sea gleamed its welcome as we turned in to Bay Saint Louis. We strolled along a pier and saw some pelicans and some other birds which we have not yet identified.
Of
particular note was the number of houses that had been raised upon stilts –
presumably after Hurricane Katrina hit the coast. (Our guide from the day
before had explained that it was not only New Orleans that suffered as a result
of the storm). There was even a couple of hotels that were on stilt-columns. We
decided that, although it would be a beautiful area in which to live, the
yearly hurricane season and the threat of another Katrina would be something to
take into consideration.
A full moon
accompanied us for the last couple of hours of our travel into Florida. We were
treated to some spectacular scenes of the moonshine among, or through the
clouds. Unfortunately, the movement of the car prevented successful
photographic capturing of the show, except for the few that are shown here. However,
the experience is stored in our memory.
