Rockies Trip - Day 2 - July 16th

Rockies Trip - Day 2 - July 16th, 2014

Wawa to Thunder Bay

A clear blue sky and bright sunshine greeted us this morning as we slipped in a quick visit into Downton Wawa to pay respects to the famous goose

Church in Wawa - solar panels in the shape of crosses - how cool is that?

As we headed westwards along Hwy 17, we passed lake after lake - some with names that were a little unappealing - Desolation Lake and Fungus Lake - to name just two!!

An hour later, we hit the small town of White River, which boasts of being the place where Winnie the Pooh first started his journey into our hearts.

Further along the highway, the town of Marathon presented itself in a much better light than in February, when we passed through on our way back from the Apostle Islands.

The slogan states, 'Built on Paper, Laced with Gold.' We saw a couple of gold mines on the roadside - fenced in, of course!

The small town has its own attraction at Pebble Beach, where the constant pounding of the waves has polishes the stones into an array of various coloured large pebbles along with driftwood of amazing smoothness and interesting shapes.

All along the Hwy, the traveler is treated to awesome vistas of Lake Superior - too many to capture with the camera and, to be quite honest, best to be consigned to memory.

Aguasabon Falls
Terrace Bay, with its sheltered beach and the constant sound of the Aguasabon Falls, will always be one of our favourite places. Shingled beaches, with rocks slipping into the lake give the impression of wilderness free from commercialisation. It was too cold for swimming, so we strolled a long the beach and investigated one of the many trails in the area.

Rossport is another beautiful spot - in fact, it was recommended by some American friends on our way up through Minnesota in the winter. It was fascinating to see the proliferation of wildflowers which added colour and texture to the stunning blue hue of the water.

Just before entering Thunder Bay, we stopped by at the Terry Fox Memorial. This young man continues to inspire us and we still find it incredible that he could negotiate the roller-coaster road in this part of Ontario. He stands as a beacon of what is possible for the human spirit - in spite of all odds.

Sleeping Giant

The Sleeping Giant can be seen very clearly from the memorial site... and it is definitely on our bucket list for a camping trip in the future.

Getting an earlier night tonight as we want to be up and on the road at 6:00 a.m. for the 10 hour plus drive to Winnipeg. We need to be there in time for our team training call - bearing in mind that we will be entering a different time zone.

A wonderful day, with lots of experiences for which we can be truly appreciative. We really do live in an exceptionally beautiful province and country.
